Only now can we report on the huge success Yorkshire Phoenix had at the recent Welsh International Open from Knighton.
The club won the International Open for teams beating British rivals San Siro Carrdiff to the title. With Cardiff dropping more individual games throughout the event, a draw in the final game between the two sides gave Phoenix their first championship title on Welsh soil!
The A team was made up of Paul Lawrenson, Martin Hodds, Adrian Curtis and Tony Mc Cann.
The club also fielded a B team in the event showing that once again Yorkshire was back as a growing force in the game. Representing Phoenix B was captain Eoin Adams, Sam Curtis, Gary Pearson and making a return to playing Richard Blythe.
Also on the Saturday saw the individual event of the Welsh International Satellite. It was fifth time lucky for Paul Lawrenson finally winning a satellite final beating fellow Phoenix team mate Adrian Curtis on a shoot out after the game finished stalemate.
Adrian Curtis was still to get his hands on a winners trophy though beating fellow Phoenix player Martin Hodds to take the Veteran Satellite title after a mamouth days play. Adrian virtually played non stop on the Saturday after the team event, Satellite Open and Satellite Veterans event. A strong back was certainly needed!
Sunday saw the International Open for Individuals take place, and there was further glory to be had for the club!
Adrian Curtis was again to star in the days proceedings reaching the Open final but missed out narrowly though to Kents Miguel Pierra. Both Martin Hodds and Tony Mc Cann made it to the semi finals making three out of the last four!
Martin Hodds gained revenge for missing out on the previous days veterans title taking the IO version, and Gary Pearson picked up some silverware in claiming the Plate title.
A truly great weekend had by all - The Phoenix invasion of Wales was well worth the trip taking all title except one. They will surely be back again next year! Well done to everyone who took part!
16/06/10
This weekend will see the club head to deepest darkest Wales to take part in several events. In particular the club will be fielding two sides in the International Open for teams. This will be the second major event in recent weeks where Phoenix have had two teams taking part.
Theres also individual action this weekend with the International Open and Satellite for players outside the worlds top 100.
Good luck Phoenix. Usual updates will be LIVE via twitter (see above)

Last week saw Phoenix finish runners up at The English National Club Championships. They narrowly missed out on the over all title to super team English Premier League. The Phoenix where leading against there rivals but lost out 1-3 in the end in the final match. The team of Paul Lawrenson, Martin Hodds, Adrian Curtis, Stuart McIlroy and new signing Alan Collins booked the clubs place in the Europa Cup which takes place in October in Mattersburg, Austria.
Phoenix also had a second team take place in the championships made up of Malc Dickson, Kev Adderley, Sam Curtis and Tony McCann. The B team finished on the same points as third placed TSPA Whitestar and fourth placed NETFA.
The Sunday saw the indidual events where Sam Curtis was crowned English Under 15 champion. A proud day for father Adrian who saw Sam capture his final under 15 championship. Sam will now step up a level from next as he aims to take the Under 19 title. Well done Sam!
Paul Lawrenson made the semi finals of the Open catergory beating NETFA's Andrew Hillerby in the quarter finals in a tense one nil scoreline. Paul lost out in the semi's to eventual champion Chris Thomas (Cardiff) 1-3.
In the veteran catergory again Phoenix had reason to be happy. Tony McCann and Alan Collins both made the semi finals. Tony made the semi's after dumping out Phoenix team mate Martin Hodds in the grouop stage. Alan Collins just missed out on the final after losing out to Whitestars Jeremy Bradley on shots.
A great weekend for the club, well done everyone who took part.

Since the last update of the site Martin Hodds travelled to Finland to take part in the double header of International Open and Grand Prix. Martin made hstory for Phoenix reaching the IO final before losing out to italian Matiengeli. The first Phoenix player to reach an Open final outside of the UK. Well done mate.
The week before saw Phoenix's Kenny Beggs and Eoin Adams satge the 2010 Belfast International Open.
Tony McCann beat Eoin Adams to take the International Plate title, Martin Hodds was one step away from retaining his Open title finishing runner up and Stuart McIlroy also made it to a final before losing out to EPL's Steve Bennett to finish runner up.
As ever a well organised event and good results for the Phoenix!

This weekend saw several Phoenix players take part in the English International Grand Prix in Milton Keynes.

(left to right, Gary Pearson, Martin Hodds (c), Kcacarie Valentine, Stathis Tsolis)
Phoenix took part in the team event (above) on the Sunday. The club where given a tough draw but were given the opportunity to rekindle some old rivalry in getting drawn against Cardiff. The other three games went as expected with defeats to top European opposition in the form of Rochefort of Belgium, Wiener Neuistadt of Austria (Semi finalists), Azzurie of Italy (eventual winners). However Phoenix saved themselves for the Cardiff game. Gary Pearson broke his FTSTF duck winning his match 2-0, Kcarrie Valentine won his game 3-0 on his Phoenix team debut, Martin Hodds drew 0-0 with Cardiff General John Lauder and Stathis Tsolis narrowly lost out in the last minute going down 1-2 to Simon Bryan. So Phoenix won the match 2-1 and finished 4th in the group. Well done boys!
The Saturday saw the individual event take place. Aswell as the above Phoenix players Rob O'Hare made a suprising entry, and new Phoenix signing Alan Collins took part in the Veterans event.
The veterans event gave the club their best results of the day. Both Martin Hodds and Alan Collins made it to the Quarter Finals before both narrowly missing out on Semi Finals placings going down 0-1 each.
Kcarrie Valentine made it to the semi finals of the plate event losing out to Italian opposition, meanwhile in the open event Stathis Tsolis made it through the group stages before exiting in the barrage round.
All in all a great weekend had by all! Next up for Phoenix id the Belfast International Open next Saturday (Volcano Ash permitting :-) )
26/04/10
Last weekend saw two of our players take part in international action. Martin Hodds made the trip North to take part in the Scottish International Open in Arbroath whilst Gary Pearson travelled south (much further south) to the Malta Grand Prix and International Open.
Gary Pearson continued his ever improving results recording his first draw on the FISTF circuit drawing 1-1 with Malta's own Mannuel Aqualina. A great weekends experience and will not doubt do wonders for confidence as the season builds to its climax.
Meanwhile Martin Hodds was to have a succesful weekend making it a treble of semi finals. On the Saturday he made it to the semi's of the Veterans event first losing out narrowly to Scotlands Scott Flemming 3-4 after giving away an open goal! Whilst in the main event Martin came back from 2 goals down against EPL's Brian Clark to draw 2-2 meaning Martin would top the group. In the semi final Martin faced a tough encounter in England International Matt Lampitt. In the end it was a step to far for our Marlon as he was edged out 0-5. Lampitt went on to win the days event in the final 4-0.
On the Sunday Martin was again drawn with Brian Clark, and again came back from 2 down to draw 2-2. This was to be the third time that this had happened in recent meetings! This meant that Martin was to top his group again after winning his other two group games. Martin faced Scotlands Gareth Christie this time and was to give as good as he got this time round. However, defeat was to be tasted again losing out in golden goal extra time 1-2. Unlucky Martin.
Well done to both players flying the flag for Phoenix at the top level. Next up for the club is the English Grand Prix next weekend in Milton Keynes. Good luck to all who are entering!

Last weekend saw the final league meet of the season take place. Going into the final day all catergories where still to play for.
Report below from Martin Hodds:-
Another good day's play to end the season in style at a sun kissed Belle Vue stadium. Round 1 results were:
Stathis 1-2 Craig
Paul 5-0 John
Brett 0-1 Munzi
Marlon 4-1 Kcarrie
Gary 1-3 Malc
Just before the second games, unfortunately Craig had to leave. Which opened the door for Paul to possibly take the title. Round 2 results were:
Craig 0-3 Paul (forfeit)
Munzi 1-7 Marlon
Malc 1-1 Stathis
John 0-1 Brett
Kcarrie 2-1 Gary
Lunch was good as usual, plus category B&C players had the opportunity to have a go at England international 'Chris Short champagne shots challenge' to win a bottle of Veuve Cliquot champagne provided by Martin. Alas none of them could beat Chris, though Kcarrie went to the 23rd shot before being edged out !! Chris therefore won the bottle.
Round 3 results were:
Paul 0-0 Marlon
Malc 3-0 Brett
Kcarrie 1-0 Stathis
John 1-2 Gary
Munzi had a bye in this round.
Round 4 results:
Paul 3-1 Malc
Marlon 5-0 Brett
Kcarrie 4-0 Munzi
Munzi 0-2 Gary
Stathis 3-0 John
Gary clinched the Cat C trophy on the day and for the season with a surprise win over Munzi, who was still on for the B title. Well done Gary !
Then Munzi played Kcarrie in the Cat B decider, with the winner taking the season title. Kcarrie beat a zombified Munzi 4-0 to take the title, well done!
Finally Paul and Marlon had a shootout to decide the Cat A winner on the day. Paul saved the final shot to edge in 2-1 and take the Challenge Cup Trophy for the day.
(Paul Lawrenson (left) receives the winners trophy from Martin Hodds)
The season Cat A title (and thus the 2009/10 club champion) was actually a tie between Paul and Craig. However with Craig not being there, there was no possibilty of a playoff. Both players have agreed to share the title. Well played to both.
New season starts Sat 18th September with 2nd meeting on Sat 20th November. See you all there if not before !

This weekend saw Phoenix make their regular appearance in Amsterdam. The players took part in the 2010 Major of Amsterdam.
Saturday saw Martin Hodds take part in the Veterans individual event. Dealt a tough draw Martin lost to Marco De Bruin 1-2 and to Italys Fabio Belloni.
The Sunday saw a squad of Paul Lawrenson, Martin Hodds, Stuart McIlroy, Eoin Adams and Richard Blythe take part in the team event.
Again a tough draw was dealt. However the team made a good fist of it! First up where the Italian side of GCT GLF Gorizia. It finished 0-2 to the Itallians, Paul Lawrenson 1-1 Aaron Allison, Martin Hodds 2-2 Andrea Cucit, Eoin Adams 1-5 Marco Pinausi, Stuart McIlroy 0-1 Marco Bernardis.
Next up was JSC Rochefort of Belgium, another tough tie, but Martin kept up his unbeaten run on the day actually recording a victory 2-1 against Emanual Gorgette, other results where StuartmcIlroy/Richard Blythe 0-8 Jean Marie Armbernay, Paul Lawrenson 1-4 Armauld Robinnard, and Eoin Adams 0-7 Olivier Saffer. Overall result 1-3 to the Belgiums.
Final match was against the seeds of the group SC Brussells . Phoenix put up a great fight against one of Europes elite, Stuart McIlroy 1-2 Fred Vanton, Paul Lawrenson 1-2 Cederic Vanton, Martin Hodds 0-3 Gil Delogne, and Eoin Adams 0-9 Laurant Coucke. Overall result 0-4 to the Belgiums.
As usual going to Amsterdam was more than just the Subbuteo, and a great weekend was had by all. Great to see the return of Eoin Adams in a Phoenix shirt, and the special cameo appearance from Richard Blythe for a half a game in the team event.
12/04/10
Kenny Beggs has added yet another Irish title to his name in winning the Celbridge Open. Beggs who is Northern Irelands number one ranked player won the 11 man swiss style event pipping fellow country man Barry Spence to the championship.
Phoenix also had another representative at the event in Eoin Adams. Eoin finished sixth overall, in what was a very strong field made of of both players from north and south of the border.
Congratulations to Kenny, well done!

Last weekend saw a team of Paul Lawrenson, Martin Hodds, Richard Pepper and Gary Pearson travel to Edinburgh for the Scottish International Grand Prix.
Saturday was the team event and Phoenix where drawn in the tougher of the two groups. First match up was against tournament hosts Hot Club. After Hot Club narrowly missed out to Phoenix for second place at The Yorkshire International Open revenge was in the air, and it was to be the Scotts turn to come out on top this time. At half time the tie was even. However, the second half all was to change everything with an inspired subsitution with Dave Baxter coming on to score the equaliser against Paul Lawrenson to draw 1-1, and Richard Pepper finally gave in to Scotland Association Chairman Mike Burns, this with Gary Pearsons defence being finally breached by Terry Brown, Martin Hodds also had a narrow defeat. Meaning Phoenix lost the tie 0-3.
After the Hot Club game it was always going to be a tough task. The club faced straight defeats to World Number One side TFC Mattersburg and and Belgium outfit Rochefort.
After a great players dinner organised by the SSTFA on the Saturday night, Sunday was the individual event.
Martin Hodds was seeded in the open event and advanced without too much trouble. But did have a tasty encounter with fellow Phoenix player Gary Pearson in the group. Hodds won the match though 3-1 in the Yorkshire Derby. Paul Lawrenson also advanced from his group on goal difference after holding world number one Eric Verhagen to a 3-4 defeat. Richard Pepper finished third in a group of five in the veterans event therefore qualifying for the plate event.
In the barrage round Paul Lawrenson narrowly missed out on a last 16 place after going 0-1 to Mike Burns of Hot Club, whilst Martin Hodds won his match 1-0 against the ever improving Miguel Periria of Kent. However, it was to be one step too far for Martin as he was to lose out in the next round to England International and semi Finalist Chris Thomas 1-2.

There was still to be silverware for Phoenix though this weekend, as Richard Pepper went on to make the runners up spot in the International Plate event. Well done Rich!
A great weekend as ever in Edinburgh, and recommended to any table footballer!

After Paul Lawrenson won the last meet in November (Rhubarb Triangle Trophy), it was a return to form for Craig Heward this time. Craig won the the days event (Merfox Trophy) with a 100% record. Craig picked up victories over Philip Townsend (3-0), Keva Adderley (3-0), Martin Hodds (2-0) and sealed the winners trophy beating Northern Irelands Stuart McIlroy in emphatic fasion 4-0! Craig is now favourite to retain his Phoenix title with only Paul Lawrenson mathamatically possible to stop him.

31/07/2009
Although the new season is still just over a month away the club would like to make an announcement regarding the 2009-10 season:-
Following the recent board meeting I have pleasure in making the following announcements for the 2009-10 season:-
Format:
The 2009-2010 Season will be split into 4 dates throughout the season, starting with the first in September. Exact date to be confirmed after the Yorkshire IO.
Match Day One - Will be a Swiss styled event.
Match Day Two - Merfox Trophy - The usual knockout syled event drawn at the start of the day. This season though, every place in the comp will be played out. So if 20 players take part you will then get to know who finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd down to 20th position. Giving everyone a good days play.
Match Day Three - Will be a Swiss styled event.
Match Day Four - Challenge Cup. The same as the Merfox day but each round of the main event will be drawn at random. Again every place will be played out to the very end.
During the Swiss events, goal difference will not be used. If two players are tied at the end of the event, then a ten minute golden goal match will take place between the two. Shots to follow if ness.
Points will be awarded for each event. These will be awarded depending on where you finish in the table that day. Then at the end of the season the player with the best three results (points total)from the four events will be deemed champion.
Also, before the start of the season all players will be allocated a catergory. For arguments sake A,B, and C. Players allocated A will be represented in a Championship Table A. Players in Catergory B will be represented in Table A and B. Finally, players in Catergory C will be represented in Tables A, B, and C. Also known as the nested system. This gives every player the opportunity to compete at his/her level aswell as the highest the club offers.
Each individual table will carry its own points allocation also. Rich will provide an example of how things may look after Match Day One.
Relegation and promotion between catergories will still happen but will be limited to one place only.
The decision to run the season in this way has been taken to cater for as many players as possible. This way all players can attend as many or as little events as they like. Trophies will be awarded at each meet as each meet is still a stand alone competetion in its own right.
Sponsorship
For the 2009-10 season the club are proud to announce that FIRST CALL GAS LTD will be the clubs new sponsors, providing the club with a new polo shirt styled team shirt for the new season.
First Call Gas is proud to be associated with Englands number one ranked club!
Membership Fee
For the first time this season you will be able to pay as you play. Match Days will be charged at £10 per meet. Once again lunch will be included in this small fee for a full days play.
As an incentive however, should you pay your £40 upfront in September, you will receive a new club shirt free of charge and ahead of any forthcoming team events.
New Signings
The club is currently in negotiations to bring new blood into the club. However, if you know or know of anyone who would like to try their hand at Phoenix next season then put them in touch.
Another good point about our new styled league competion is that it caters for the new player better than ever. So again, have a word and see if you can get someone to come along and see what all the fuss is about.
31/5/2009
At the final meeting of the season, reigning Superleague champion Craig Heward retained his title with his final game of the season, a 5-1 win against club captain Paul Lawrenson. Paul was previously the only player who could catch Craig. Well done Craig !
Paul did win against Paul Lloyd, who also drew with Richard Pepper. Please see the Results and League Tables pages for updated versions.
The Phoenix Challenge Cup was won against the odds by Conference champion Kcarrie Valentine, beating 2 Superleague players en route to his first final. The final against Paul Lawrenson was settled on shots after a goalless draw. Well done to Kcarrie on a great result !
In the one Conference game played, Rich Kane secured 2nd place with a win against close rival Tony Pickance.
There was also a 'Team Craig' v 'Team Rich' challenge match, with each captain selecting players for a total of 15 ties. Rich was victorious by 7 games to 5 !
Everyone had a good day and hopefully we will see all players plus some new faces back for the new season's 1st meeting in September. Watch this site for details in the near future !
11/5/09
Saturday 9th May saw Phoenix players Martin Hodds, Kenny Beggs and Eoin Adams contest the Belfast International Open tournament. It was a good day for the club, with Hodds and Beggs contesting an all Phoenix final ! A tight game ended in a 0-0 draw, with Martin winning on shots. Kenny also reached the Veterans final.

Hodds & Beggs in the final, with Scotland's Brian Clark as ref - Martin parades the trophy !
8/4/09
The weekend of 4/5 April saw Phoenix travel to the Major of Amsterdam, one of the biggest tournaments on the continent.
Saturday's team event saw a superb performance from the foursome of Lawrenson, Hodds, McIlroy and the welcome return of Rob O'Hare. Belgian club Rochefort's B team were put to the sword 3-0 which ensured a passage to the next round. Mattersburg and Delft proved too strong, but history was made as this was the club's first last 16 qualification in a European tournament.
On Sunday, only Hodds competed in the individual competition, and again qualified from his group with a win over another Rochefort player, before bowing out 4-0 to former world champion and eventual tournament winner Carlos Flores (Spain).
The main thing was all players (plus subbuteo groupies Walter and Steve!) had a fantastic few days in Amsterdam.
31/3/09
This weekend saw a sizeable Phoenix contingent head south to the English Grand Prix event at Milton Keynes.
Saturday's individual competition saw a notable performance from Andrew Hillerby, who reached the last 16 before bowing out to maltese ace Massimo Cremona. In the previous round Andrew was 2-0 down with 5 minutes left but came storming back with 3 goals in those 5 minutes ! Alas nobody managed to pick up any silverware, the closest was Sam Curtis who reached the Under 15 semifinals.
In the team event on Sunday, we were placed in a group of 4 with AS Hennuyer (Belgium), Sparta Spreeathen (Germany) and Cardiff. A very tough draw, and an exit in the group despite some good individual performances from all the team. Player of the day was Stuart McIlroy with a win and a draw from his 3 games.
7/3/09
Today saw a program of Superleague games at the regular venue Belle Vue in Wakefield. Reigning champion Craig Heward moved to within one win of retaining his crown, despite his first defeat in 2 seasons against Richard Pepper. Only club captain Paul Lawrenson can catch him if he wins all his remaining games.
We also piloted a new 'mini leagues' system, Rich Kane and Gary Pearson picked up their first Phoenix silverware in the 2 divisions played, well done to both.
1/3/09
Yesterday 3 Phoenix players travelled to Teesside to take part in the North East TFA's new Astrobase League. 12 players took part in total on the day.
With 2 wins and 2 defeats, Kevin Adderley was our highest ranked player. Richard Pepper drew his first 3 games, including a 2-2 draw with Martin Hodds, and went down by the odd goal against Ben Staples. Martin also drew his first 3 games and was "rewarded" with a final match against national champion Chris Thomas ! Chris won 3-1.
All players enjoyed the day and will be hoping to take part in further NETFA events. Other players are very welcome to join them !

Red Nosed Phoenix
On Thursday February 19th, Yorkshire Phoenix joined Football League club Rotherham United in a Comic Relief fundraiser at Parkgate Retail World in Rotherham.
A really successful afternoon saw numerous fans of all ages visit the event to have their picture taken with the Rotherham players and get their autographs. There was also face painting and a life sized game of Operation.
The kids really enjoyed playing Subbuteo against each other and the players, with Phoenix players coaching them. Some of the Rotherham players really got into playing !
Check out the Photo Gallery for some pictures of the event.
25/01/09
Two Yorkshire Phoenix players travelled to the Scottish Grand Prix at Easter Road, Edinburgh, the home of Hibernian FC. Kcarrie Valentine played well in a tough group, and went down to Scottish international Kevin Christopher and England captain Dave Pawsey.
11/01/09
A strong Phoenix contingent took part in the Huntingdon Satellite tournament. Martin Hodds reached the semi final before losing 3-1 to Greek player Adrian Ritoridis. Kevin Adderley also had a good run to the quarter final, as did Adrian Curtis, and Kcarrie Valentine reached the barrage round.

The club is proud to announce it's SIXTH new signing of the summer in capturing EPL's Andrew Hillerby. Andrew becomes the 4th EPL player this summer to make the switch.

(Vice captain Martin Hodds (left) with Andrew)
In a breif statement Andrew said the following:-
"This season Yorkshire have consistently managed to enter teams at events I've been keen to play in - and being invited to join Yorkshire next season will hopefully give me a more stable base from which to plan my participation at events, play a good few games and keep improving.
And as tournament numbers have recently worringly dwindled, I believe the league aspect of the game will play an even greater role in sustaining Subbuteo in this country. The Yorkshire league structure certainly appeals to me.
I'm looking forward to next season and can't wait to get started."
Phoenix Chairman Paul Lawrenson said:- " I am very pleased that Andrew has decieded to join the club. It has been a long process in capturing Andrew's signature, but I am sure it will pay dividends many times this upcoming season. Andrew will be a great asset to both team events and the Phoenix new league season that starts on September 6th."

Statement from Rob O'Hare:-
''I'm absolutely delighted to be returning to Yorkshire Phoenix next season. The club is very unique in this country, and prides itself on promoting Subbuteo not just in Yorkshire, but for the whole of the UK. There is a real family vibe to the organisation which can't be bettered anywhere and I'm really looking forward to playing with these guys at International tournaments again.
I'm also thrilled to be kicking-off the Southern Premier League next season. This is a fantastic opportunity for all Southern based Phoenix members to stay in touch and play on a regular basis and hopefully the club will attract a few more new players to its already growing membership. This new league will potentially make Yorkshire Phoenix an even stronger club, both domestically and when playing as a unified team at UK and International events, therefore enhancing its reputation within the world Subbuteo scene''
''I would also like to take this opportunity in thanking EPL captain Dave Pawsey for his support regarding my decision in leaving, and I wish EPL continued success in the future''
